En este número, quisimos conversar con dos profesionales de la enfermería, nuestra primera línea, que desde el primer día han estado al pie del cañón luchando contra el COVID-19 que ha convulsionado al mundo entero, incluido Paraguay, donde el personal de blanco ha debido además, luchar por la falta de infraestructura adecuada, equipos de oxígeno y vacunas para proteger la vida de quienes día a día se enfrentan a la peor pandemia de décadas.
“Llevamos casi todas las noches perdiendo a un ser humano”
Nos dice el Licenciado Emilio Ferreira, de 36 ños y quien en la actualidad trabaja en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos del Hospital de ISP INGAVI, donde dice que llegó hace seis meses por cuestiones personales y de la pandemia. Asegura que la sobre carga que tiene, no le permite trabajar en ninguna otra parte. Es casado con otra enfermera y tienen un hijo, y esta es su historia.
¿Cómo es un día habitual de tu trabajo? ¿Podrías describirlo?
Y (piensa)… quisiera decirte “Todo bien”, pero sería mentirme a mí mismo, llevamos casi todas las noches perdiendo a un ser humano y entre ellos tenemos seres queridos, muchas veces familiares de algunos colegas, hijos, padres. La situación genera mucha impotencia como profesional, a veces los resultados no son lo que esperamos, pero estamos siempre luchando y tratando de ayudar a que nuestros pacientes salgan adelante, esa siempre es la meta, pero lo que con lleva eso, es todo un reto para mí y para mis compañeros.
¿Cuáles son los principales problemas que enfrentan en el ámbito laboral, desde el punto de vista de las condiciones laborales, insumos e infraestructura?
Con respecto a los insumos, gracias a Dios, no tenemos falencias, también nos capacitan constantemente, además contamos con la magnífica infraestructura de IPS INGAVI, pero siempre se requiere un poco más de inversión en tanques de oxígeno ya que con la cantidad de paciente que tenemos, en ocasiones falta balón de oxígeno, entonces tratamos siempre de pedir ayuda a otras unidades, pedir prestado y cosas así. A veces enfermería hace magia para quien necesitan y entre ellos insumos de medicamento para los internados.
¿Qué cosas crees que deberían cambiar para sentirte más seguro en este escenario de pandemia?
Creo que sin duda alguna nos merecemos más ayuda, es decir, que contraten más enfermeros y médicos para los servicios, porque van cayendo enfermos compañeros y compañeras. En ocasiones nos toca luchar con poco recursos humano durante la noche y es complico así asistirle con la misma calidad a todos. Por supuesto merecidamente necesitamos que el estado también nos ayude en la parte económica, el sueldo que percibimos es pésimo para semejante trabajo, considerando los riesgos que el mismo conlleva.
¿Llegaste a contagiarte de COVID 19 antes de recibir la vacuna o después de recibirla? ¿Y si te contagiaste, como viviste la enfermedad?
Hace 6 meses estoy en área respiratoria, ya pasamos de todo en el servicio y entre mil cosas soy bendecido porque nunca me he contagiado. Por suerte ya hace 2 meses cumplí mi esquema de vacunación de COVID 19.
Y… mi mensaje para todos mis colegas es fuerza, mucha fuerza y firmes que de apoco esta lucha la ganaremos. Que siempre cumplan con los cuidados y las medidas de protección, la única salvación es el autocuidado. Enfrentar esto, no es joda, mucho ojo compañeros, mejor prevenir. Me tocó ver a muchos compañeros caer, perdimos seres queridos, pero seguimos en la lucha, pareciera que enfermería no debe nunca enfermarse o cansarse pero en algunos momentos, por apurarnos a veces caemos en el virus, por no cuidar las medidas sanitarias en el apuro, pero mucho ojo, lo mejor es cuidarse primero y así cuidamos a la familia en general.
“Con la vacuna han disminuido los pacientes, pero no bajamos los brazos”
Asegura la Licenciada Viviana Benítez, de 25 años de edad. Actualmente, trabaja en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Respiratorios (UCIR) adultos del Hospital del IPS INGAVI, dependiente del Ministrio de Salud Pública y de Bienestar Social (MSPYBS). También nos cuenta que trabaja en el Sanatorio La Costa desde hace dos años, donde producto de la pandemia, fue designada al área de aislados internados. Hace tres meses está en Terapia de Cuidados Respiratorios.
¿Cómo es un día habitual de tu trabajo? ¿Podrías describirlo?
Hoy por hoy gracias a Dios, bajo el flujo de pacientes con cuadros respiratorios estamos más seguros, ya que la gente es responsable y con la vacuna ha disminuido mucho pero no bajamos los brazos, ni nos relajamos porque en la terapia muchas veces un paciente es súper complejo y podríamos estar 12 horas luchando para salvar la vida de alguien y ni se imaginan cuando antes teníamos 5 a 8 pacientes por 1 enfermero, un caos que solo el personal de blanco podría comprender. Sentimos cansancio, desesperación y muchas veces hasta no comemos por la falta de tiempo.
¿Cuáles son los principales problemas que enfrentan en el plano laboral desde el punto de vista de condiciones laborales, insumos e infraestructura?
Con respecto a los insumos contamos con lo necesario, aunque en ocasiones la falta de algún medicamento hace que tengamos que acudir a familiares para poder cumplir con el tratamiento, situación que me apena y me entristece, porque bien sabemos la difícil situación económica que atraviesa a nivel país y mundialmente. Aun así los familiares de los pacientes, a parte de la preocupación de tener a un miembro de su familia internado, también tienen que lidiar con las faltas de insumos y/o medicamentos y rebuscarse incluso llegando a adeudarse para conseguir el medicamento.
¿Qué cosas crees que deberían cambiar para sentirte más seguro en este escenario de pandemia?
No sé, qué más podríamos pedir después de que hoy día muchos están ya inmunizados, es incomparable la salud. La familia y amigos valen millón, creo que estamos en la etapa de agradecer mucho todo lo que estamos aquí, contando esta historia, pero calidad de servicio es lo que nunca ha faltado de parte nuestra. Pero si pedir a las autoridades que inviertan para tener mejor calidad de infraestructura para comodidad de pacientes y familiares.

Sí, me contagie en noviembre pasado, antes de vacunarme, en ese entonces Paraguay aún estaba muy lejos de adquirir las vacunas.
¿Qué mensajes nos das desde tu puesto de trabajo a todos tus colegas y personas que están pasando por situaciones difíciles que acarrea esta pandemia, tanto en lo laboral y familiar?
Uff! Las 12 horas de guardias pasamos infinidades de cosas, orgullosa de decir que tengo como compañeros de lucha a profesionales con vocación, excepcionales personas, valientes, con dones y carismas que exige enfermería, como siempre les digo. Somos un equipo, nos ayudamos en cada procedimiento, compartimos alegrías y tristezas. Cuando vemos por lo menos a unos pocos pacientes que reciben su Alta de UTI, lloramos de alegría, ya varias veces nos tocó ver partir a nuestros pacientes, muchos de ellos jóvenes, que a pesar de un esfuerzo infrahumano, no logramos que sobrevivan. Es una situación que nos entristece, pero nos fortalece dar absolutamente todo lo mejor de nosotros, con amor sobretodo, que es la clave y cumpliendo de esa forma con el deber del cuidado.
Dios da las herramientas al hombre y el hombre las utiliza, creemos, y tenemos fe de que con ayuda del pueblo y con la inoculación de la gran mayoría de la población, este mal por lo menos cesará bastante, de tal forma que poco a poco volvamos a la normalidad, por supuesto siguiendo siempre con las medidas sanitarias necesarias, medidas que a partir de ahora será nuestra nueva manera de vivir, lo bueno de la pandemia es que hemos aprendido hábitos básicos, que no solo nos cuidan de contraer el coronavirus sino también varias otras enfermedades.
Antes de darles un consejo a mis colegas me gustaría felicitar a cada uno, desde que comenzó la Pandemia llevamos cargando con un cansancio extremo, y a pesar de las carencias, preocupaciones, e incertidumbre, hemos salido al campo de batalla, sin armas, pero envueltos de coraje y valentía. A ustedes compañeros GRACIAS por la entrega sin igual.
Les insto a que sigamos luchando, no olvidemos el pasado, lo que nos enseñó la pandemia, y lo que aún seguiremos aprendiendo a lo largo de nuestro ejercicio profesional. El cuidado es la esencia de enfermería, pero hacerlo con amor es de ángeles en la tierra, seamos pues luz de esperanza para los que se encuentran agobiados en la angustia y la ansiedad, que nuestras palabras sean fomentadoras de paz y amor, ciertamente nuestra labor es impagable por lo que solo Dios sabrá recompensarnos.
