“Invertir en la enfermería es avanzar hacia el acceso universal a la salud”

La vigencia de la pandemia del COVID 19 en el año 2021 ha traído consigo grandes desafíos para el sistema de salud de manera general y, de manera particular a los Enfermeras, pues la enfrentó a una Enfermedad nueva, desconocida, desafiante y sobre todo, con un alto porcentaje de mortalidad, de contagio y sobre todo de incertidumbre.

Ante semejante desafío, el profesional de la enfermería se enfrentó a la realidad de un sistema de salud con muchas precariedades e incertidumbres, la falta de insumos, de materiales de bioseguridad personal, el déficit de recursos humanos, la alta posibilidad de contagios, incluso riesgo de vida y la tardía implementación del proceso de vacunación a los trabajadores de la salud, que costó la vida a 72 enfermeros activos durante la pandemia.

Pero, estos profesionales no solo se enfrentaron a la realidad de la pandemia en los lugares de trabajo, donde el riesgo era de día a día, que se hacía extensivo a la familia, sino a la necesidad de proseguir con la necesidad de atención a la salud en otras áreas y la gran cantidad que también adquirían la enfermedad diezmando aún más, la cantidad de enfermeros y enfermeras activos.

Ante todas estas realidades adversas, surgen el valor y la entereza los profesionales de la Enfermería que hoy constituyen el 60% de los recursos humanos en el sistema de salud y un recurso imprescindible para atender la demanda de la población y así cumplir con los demás programas de atención.

En este sentido, se destaca a lo que afirma la Organización Panamericana de la Salud en relación al valor de las Enfermeras y que dicta: Washington, DC, 8 de mayo de 2019 (OPS)- Con el lanzamiento de la Orientación estratégica para enfermería en la Región de las Américas, la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) ha pedido hoy a los países que inviertan en las enfermeras y enfermeros con el fin de mejorar su disponibilidad, distribución y roles para avanzar hacia la salud universal.

El personal de enfermería es la mayor fuerza laboral en salud, representan más del 50% del total, sin embargo, su escasez compromete la meta global de lograr la salud para todos en 2030.

La doctora Carissa F. Etienne, directora de la OPS, señaló que “en muchas partes del mundo, los profesionales de enfermería constituyen el primero y algunas veces el único recurso humano en contacto con los pacientes” y consideró que “invertir en la enfermería significa avanzar hacia el acceso y la cobertura universal de salud, lo cual tendrá un efecto profundo en la salud global y el bienestar”

Ante esta realidad tan contundente que expresa la directora general de la OPS/OMS, de la necesidad y la obligación moral que tienen los gobiernos de invertir en la profesión y en los profesionales de Enfermería  para avanzar en el acceso y la cobertura universal de la salud, que sin duda, tendrá el efecto del bienestar y la equidad más aún en las poblaciones vulnerables, las enfermeras/os elevan su voz de reclamo exponiendo la gran necesidad de que “ El valor y la necesidad de mayor cantidad y calidad de enfermeras sea considerado por los gobiernos, garantizando un trabajo decente y mejores condiciones laborales, respetando sus derechos fundamentales y las legislaciones vigente”.
